Assignment 2: Where you dont belong.
For this Assignment, I found myself in the back of the State Theater. I enjoyed being in this location because movies have always been something special to me. However, I still felt that I didn’t belong because I had only ever been behind a movie screen and up in the projector room once before. When I entered the theater, I was met by a man named Paul who, after explaining the assignment to him, offered to show me around.
The first place he took me was onto the Stage, where one of his co-workers was working on the lights before taking me to the projector room. Paul was happy to discuss in great length the details of the brand-new Lazer projector and how much money it cost. I asked if they still have a film projector and if they still use it. The answer was no, as the film projectors they do have are so old that they can’t buy new parts to repair them.
I enjoyed this assignment much more than the stranger. I found it much easier to discuss the space and learn about the people in it through those questions. I also found this assignment easier because of my fondness for movies. Paul and I were able to connect over the movies we liked, which ones they played at the theater, and which ones we thought they should screen. My favorite conversation we had was about the importance of cinema as the first new medium to tell our stories in a long-form way since books.
